About Art Psychotherapy

My role is to create a unique space for the specialised type of communication experienced in art psychotherapy.

Within this safe, creative and honest space, expression and exploration of difficult feelings, thoughts and emotions can take place. Observing these, through the art work and with the support of an art psychotherapist gives people a better understanding of themselves.

A safe creative environment

Giving you a new view of yourself

In art therapy sessions you do not need to be skilled or experienced in art, this is not an art lesson. You will be free to express yourself and explore any difficulties whilst using art materials; these include paints, pastels, pencils, felt-tipped pens, collage and modelling materials.

During this process I will support you in your artmaking and with anything you wish to talk about. And together we can look at your art work and if you want to we can talk about it to and try to find the right words for you.

What might happen in art therapy?

Each session is different as all clients are different. Group art therapy will have a common theme or aim, the participants will learn from each other's experiences working either individually or together to create a group artwork. Some people feel more comfortable in a group, some people in one-to-one sessions. Some people want a theme, some don't, some think they don't, then do. Sometimes we play drawing games, some people draw images of their difficulties, some make marks and patterns or models. Some talk without making art, some make art without talking. Some people work at the desk, some standing up, and others like to work whilst sitting on the floor.

All clients explore and experiment with the continued support and of the art psychotherapist.
